When you walk into a tile store to pick out your new bathroom tile, you’re bombarded with so many different things. There’s ceramic, there’s porcelain, there’s natural stone, there’s decorative glass tiles. Typically, one’s first instinct is walk towards the shiny decorative tiles. They spend minutes upon minutes looking for the perfect decorative statement. But they don’t even have their basic wall and floor tile yet! This is the biggest mistake so many people make.
“when you commit to your decorative statement, first, you really limit yourself with colors and the amount of movement that you can use with your tile”
I understand the first instinct to look through all of the decorative tiles first. It’s easiest and it’s the most fun. However, when you commit to your decorative statement, first, you really limit yourself with colors and the amount of movement that you can use with your tile. And that’s a bummer because your decorative statement is typically only going to make up about 10% of the bathroom, and more than likely, it’s going to be in the least visible place in the bathroom. These places are typically around the border in the shower and in the inset of the niche (which will be obscured by shampoo bottles half the time). Furthermore, usually there is going to be a shower door or a shower curtain enclosing the shower area, so the decorative statement that people are so eager to choose, will be seen even less.
“It’s like choosing the jewelry before the outfit…”
It’s very important to that people understand that these accent tiles, are just that: ACCENTS. It’s like choosing the jewelry before the outfit. It’s unwise to choose them before making a decision on what floor and wall tile that you want. It will limit you and make the process harder. So, next time you’re shopping for tiles, make an effort to start with the basics first, you will thank me later.
